Following the Ruling by the Supreme Court, the Left in Mexico Has Asked to Import Seeds

  • In less than a month, 55 people have requested authorisation to grow and consume cannabis. Now a political party has also done so in order to be able to import the seeds that will then be used. The situation is difficult as, at the moment, Cofepris is not obliged to deliver the product to those that have a similar permit.

A few weeks ago, the Mexican Senate approved opening a debate to tackle the possible legalisation of marijuana in the country. The idea comes after a ruling from the Supreme Court provided protection to several members of the society SMART, and they will now be able to grow, harvest, possess and transport marijuana for their own consumption.

Because of this ruling, others have decided to launch their own requests. In less than a month, 55 people have requested authorisation to achieve the same as those members of that association. They have been joined by the Party of the Democratic Revolution. The left-wing grouping has done so with a different touch, as they have presented 32 requests not only for consuming and sowing but also for importing seeds from places where the sale is legal.

The head of the party’s youth wing, Sergio Leyva, appeared before Cofepris to submit a request from the Federal District, meanwhile, another 31 members of the party did so in the name of each state in the country. This amounts to a qualitative leap in the request, as it includes the selling of those seeds at the beginning of the chain, as explained by the political representative Abraham Rojas, who recently proposed legalising the plant for the medical sector.

It is an important question as, with the ruling from the higher institution, it is Cofepris (the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks) who are in charge of granting permits. However, this body is not obliged to deliver seeds to those that obtain the permits.

In fact, one of the judges that debated the ruling, took a stance against that, with the view that obtaining seeds to grow is a crime in the country. Therefore, it will be difficult to guarantee that the rest of the process (growing and consumption) takes place without obstacles. It seems clear that while the initial part of the process continues to be seen as a crime, it will be difficult to obtain the seeds in a regular way.

However, if this left-wing party achieves a positive response, the situation will change. It is very possible that the product will be accepted and those that go to consume it and grow it will have no type of legal problems. At the moment it is necessary to wait and see what the response will be.
