New Study: Cannabis Reduces Migraines

  • Colorado researchers worked with over 100 patients to determine whether cannabis reduced the pain from this malady. 85% noted a decrease in the monthly frequency of the pathology. Of this percentage, 12% reported that consuming the plant before the worsening of the health problem halted it.

Migraines are an irritating ailment that prevents individuals from leading normal lives. A severe headache that forces one to remain in the dark, and returns periodically, when one least expects it. Now a group of researchers has demonstrated that cannabis helps to allay the pathology's effects.

American professionals from range of various academic departments in Colorado realised that no clinical trials had been performed to demonstrate the results of marijuana on patients suffering from migraines. However, they were aware that cannabinoids could act on serotonin in the central nervous system, reducing the monthly frequency of this type of pain.

Thus, they worked with a group of 121 people who had been diagnosed with initial-stage migraines. They wanted to evaluate how often they suffered them each month, and how their intensity was altered by cannabis consumption, under the supervision of a medical team prescribing them the medication.

According to the authors 85% of the subjects reported a decrease in the frequency with which they experienced symptoms. Of these, 12% indicated that consuming grass before the onset of discomfort helped to avert it.

This is an important breakthrough because, although there were several reports that spoke of the plant's positive effect on this health problem, it had yet to be scientifically documented with regards to use by humans. Now these professionals believe that new research will be necessary to indicate in what way the plant should be consumed, in what doses, and at what time.
