- The researchers Manuel Guzmán, Guillermo Velasco and Cristina Sánchez are among the members of this new body. They aim to provide consultation to citizens, media and institutions, always using scientific studies and clinical tests.
For some years now, an important group of Spanish researchers has focussed on analysing the characteristics of cannabis, cannabinoids, and its components with the aim of determining in what way it can help to combat certain illnesses as well as its side effects.
Now, these experts who are renowned in the sector, and mostly come from universities, have joined up with a unique and necessary proposal for the study of marijuana in the country. Their alliance has resulted in the Spanish Observatory of Medical Cannabis (OECM) that is required to promote, coordinate and carry out activities linked to the knowledge of the properties and the medical uses of the plant and its derivative products.
This body will also contribute to providing guidance to public and private bodies, as well as disseminating updated information to the media, institutions and society about the plant. This will always be done using the results from scientific studies and clinical tests.
The well-known faces at the OECM include Manuel Guzmán, Guillermo Velasco and Cristina Sánchez, but there is also Carola Pérez, Javier Pedraza, Ekaitz Agirregoitia, José Carlos Bouso, Mariano García de Palau, Joan Parés and José Martínez-Orgado. They are researchers, doctors and members of patient associations.
The backers of the body believe that it is necessary for the administration and institutions to give an urgent response to users of medical cannabis. They live surrounded by great legal and medical insecurity due to the lack of regulation. Now the academic sector is making a move in order to reveal the marvellous secrets of our favourite plant.
