Seven Arrested in a Vitoria Cannabis Club Raid

  • Witnesses report that the action was more violent than on previous occasions, but that they are fighting, and will continue to fight, for their club.

A few days ago the Ertzaintza arrested seven people at a cannabis club in Vitoria (Calle Guatemala), after receiving harsh complaints from residents about the strong smell of marijuana emanating from it. Those involved were arrested as part of an operation against drug trafficking, though they were later released.

According to local papers, inside the club, Basque Country police purportedly found illegal crops. In spite of this, the plants were not seized, due to the legal limbo in which social cannabis clubs find themselves in this community (and in almost all of Spain).

One of those arrested, a member of the association, stated that he stands firm and will continue struggling for the cause, and that he had received many calls and demonstrations of support about the incident.

It is not the first time that the association has witnessed this type of event. However, according to witnesses, this time the situation was more violent than on previous occasions, when they were had been warned about the visit beforehand.

The possession of marijuana for personal consumption is allowed; it is in this context in which these cannabis associations come about, which are legally registered for the purpose of producing cannabis for a specific group of people, with no aim to turn a profit. At the beginning of the year the Basque government announced its intention to regulate these facilities, but firm steps have not yet been taken in this regard.
