Pot Luck: the Late-70s Cannabis-Themed Monopoly Game that Became a Collector's Item

  • It was created in '79 and today is a genuine collector's item. This cannabis-themed board game delivers fun in the best possible way: spending time with your beloved plant.

In 1979 Kapcar Productions placed Pot Luck on sale, a board game designed just for lovers of such amusements...and marijuana. This was a cannabis-based version of Monopoly, with 2 to 6 players buying and selling major amounts of cannabis instead of hotels.

Both the game board and cards were designed with numerous, colourful drawings. In fact, the cards are adorned with photos and colours that depend on the variety of cannabis that a user can have.

Its creators defined it as a simple game with little content so that anyone could enjoy it without complications and have a fun and relaxing time with friends. It was recommended, however, for those 18 and older

Board Game Geek, the “bible” of these products, classifies Pot Luck as “humorous” and “economical,” and recommends it for collectors of “contraband games.” But, of course, it was also designed for lovers of the game and the plant: what could be better than a Monopoly game adapted to your most demanding tastes?

People have paid as much as 300 euros (350 dollars) for one of these relics, second hand, and almost 900 euros (1,000 dollars) for a new one. Those who manage to get hold of it will be bound to take a wistful look back at the past, recapturing a source of 70s fun.
