These Pollutants Are Your Marijuana Plant's Greatest Enemies

  • During the marijuana growing and packaging processes, plants can be exposed to different chemical and microbiological pollutants that can cause serious health risks for consumers.

Among the main pollutants that can endanger both our health and that of our cannabis plants are lead, cadmium, mercury and chrome. They are especially heavy metals that build up in the human organism and take quite a long time to get rid of. When they are present in the body in very high doses, certain metabolic imbalances take place that can even result in poisoning and death.

The cannabis plant is quite resistant to this type of substances, although other plants do not tolerate being grown with a high proportion of them. In fact, cannabis plants are sometimes used as a treatment for polluted soil as the cannabis rapidly absorbs these products. It has been shown that it can even absorb radioactive caesium.

Heavy metals are not the only thing that can contaminate cannabis. There are other non-metallic chemicals that are dangerous such as arsenic, which is linked to skin cancer and other illnesses. Therefore, it is not recommended to water cannabis plants using underground water supplies or water from wells, as these sources tend to have a higher concentration of this element.

On the other hand, using nitrogen based fertilisers can also harm our health. Upon contact with the soil, nitrogen transforms into ammonium and nitrites. If those nitrites are consumed, they can turn into substances that have a high capacity to cause tumours. Therefore, although it seems obvious, cannabis that is intended for consumption, should not contain traces of pesticides or insecticides.

Now that we are all aware of what type of elements can put our plants as well as our own health at risk, it is necessary to pay attention, be careful and really tend to our crop more than ever.
