- There are companies that sell marijuana-based cakes, capsules and medication in powder form designed for animals, especially the sick and old. They have been marketing these foods for months, even though current laws do not permit their prescription.
California resident Wendy Mansfield had an appointment with a veterinarian to put down her ill dog, an old Labrador that suffered from chronic pain, was apathetic and depressed. However, days before going to the appointment she decided to test out a last resort: cakes shaped like little bones, specifically created for ill dogs, which she had bought at a marijuana dispensary.
Just 20 minutes after trying it, the animal ceased to exhibit signs of pain. After two or three cakes, the dog got up to drink some water and went outside to stretch his legs a little–something he had not done in a long time. Mansfield then decided to cancel her appointment with her vet: she felt that she had her pet back, and resolved to continue buying the little cookies from the store “Auntie Dolores,” which sells all type of hemp-based, low-THC products.
And she's not alone. With the burgeoning business in marijuana a new market segment has been opening up in recent months, and seems to be up-and-coming: foods containing marijuana for old and ill pets. Canna-Pet is an example of a company dedicated to the sale of these types of products. If benefits from contributions by scientists, researchers and veterinarians, and offers products with cannabidiol in the form of cakes, pouches (traditional medication style) and capsules, the best options for those who want to give their pets a better quality of life.
The first companies created to cover this market, however, must convince investors and caregivers that their products can be beneficial for their animals. They also face laws that still do not allow the prescription of cannabis-containing medications for animals (although in the United States many places do allow them for people). At this time some have decided to take the first step, like the State of Nevada, which is debating a bill to give animal lovers hope in this regard.
