- Several groups gave away free marijuana seeds to celebrate legalisation in the District of Columbia. Neither the cold nor the waiting times kept the throngs away.
In Washington D.C. anyone over the age of 21 can possess up to 60 grams of marijuana, smoke it in a private manner, and grow it too. These are, of course, grounds for joy, and to celebrate legalisation around 15,000 free cannabis seeds are being handed out to users throughout the city.
According to Adam Eidinger, a supporter of legalisation for recreational purposes, the initiative drew over 2,000 people, who started lining up days before, and waited for up to three hours to get their seeds, in response to an effort by the DC Cannabis Campaign group.
Participants report that the distribution is taking place in a relaxed atmosphere, despite the cold temperatures, which have not put a damper on the response. Police are even organising the traffic and helping to guide those among the crowds who are getting lost and building up between the buildings. "These seeds are a symbol of freedom," said one the participants.
Some of the people who have showed up at the distribution points informed local media outlets that everybody is excited about the change and that the adult generation "is coming out the closet" thanks to advances like this.
Many have revealed that they had been smoking privately for years, so it is a relief to be able to do so legally now.
