The Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman has acknowledged that he has been using cannabis for several years and has pleaded for marijuana legalisation “across all sectors”, especially in the medical field. Freeman takes it to ease pain caused by a traffic accident he was involved in back in 1977 which left his arm “destroyed”. He stated the following in an interview: “I have a problem with my arm, I suffer from fibromyalgia, it hurts me, and the only solution that I have found has been marijuana”.

Aged 77, Freeman has highlighted the fact that the plant has "many useful uses" and he admitted that he smokes, drinks, snorts and even eats marijuana, “which leads to more potent and long lasting effects”, he stated.

He also wanted to raise awareness by warning that, while alcohol is legal and does not have recognised medicinal benefits, marijuana does have them, and is still illegal in many places: "Maybe if you have one drink it’ll quiet you down, but two or three and you’re fucked”.

The actor, who won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby”, also talked about minors who medicate with marijuana. He described children who “who suffer a lot, but marijuana eases the pain down so that they can have a life”. Freeman believes that the legalisation movement “is taking a long time to arrive, despite the fact that it is necessary and a right”.

The arguments of the well-known actor go a step further than those made by David Simpson, a Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives, backed by the Tea Party. He presented a draft bill to legalise cannabis claiming that it was created by God, and that “God did not make a mistake". The fact that such recognisable faces like Freeman are taking a public stance in favour of regulation is a step forward for the cannabis legalisation battle.
