At 71, the Legendary Keith Richards Still Starts Every Day with Marijuana

  • The famed Rolling Stones guitarist recognised in an interview that he smokes cannabis every morning, and that he likes how the map of the United States has been dyed green thanks to legalisation in some states

Now 71, Keith Richards is on the verge of releasing a new album: on 18 September his third solo album, Crosseyed Heart, will come out. The celebrated guitarist looked back on his career in the magazine Mojo, in which he shared his favourite morning habit: getting up and smoking marijuana. “I normally smoke a joint each morning. Strictly Californian,” the British artist acknowledged in the interview.

Richards also praised the legalisation of cannabis in the states of Oregon, Alaska, Washington and Colorado. “One of the most pleasing things to see is a map of America that is turning green… green… green...” the renowned guitarist observed in the interview.

His new record, which comes after 20 years without releasing any material outside the Rolling Stones, is not Richards' only project. In the interview he reported that the band will get together again to record in the studio after its recent Zip Code tour of the United States. “Are we going to record and tour again? I think that we will.” For now we can enjoy the first single off their next album, “Trouble”.

Marijuana seems to agree with this seventy-something, who wants to continue delighting his fans, both with his legendary group and as a solo artist. Richards is not the only famous figure to recently acknowledge that he consumes marijuana, and to support its legalisation. The guitarist's statements follow those of actress Susan Sarandon, who smokes cannabis to draft the scripts to her films, and Morgan Freeman, who consumes it to calm the pain produced by the fibromyalgia from which he suffers.
