- On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26th) News Republic–an application to read news proceeding from different sources–conducted an interesting study amongst users from 11 international regions to gauge what percentage of users from each region would support the legalisation of the private use of marijuana.
News Republic gathered the opinions of 7,882 people of a range of ages, social classes, cultures, economic groups and geographic areas. Overall 60% of those surveyed were in favour of the legalisation of cannabis, while 20% disapproved. The countries in the Americas were those most tolerant of cannabis, with Russia most opposed to it.
Among the results obtained: 66% of Spaniards who use the app would accept regulation. In North America the percentage climbs to 74%, while in Latin America it stands at 75%. These are the regions with the most favourable opinion of marijuana regulation, while in Russia just 30% of users agreed with legalising personal consumption, making it the most hostile region to the idea.
In Europe, marijuana acceptance percentages are quite high, ranging from 54%-66%, with Spain and the UK at the top of favourable opinions, followed by Italy (64%), Germany (62%) and France (54%). Not all users on the Old Continent, however, were so categorical: 34% said they were absolutely in favour of personal use; 32%, in favour; 15%, absolutely against; 12%, against, and 7% did not know what to think.
The conclusions express great support for the private use of the plant, but News Republic has called for people to be aware of and think about the fact that the unlawful use of certain products can have serious consequences and damage health. On the other hand, a survey of this type also sheds light on the paths that cannabis-related policies could follow in the coming years.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was established in 1987 by the UN General Assembly to remind people of the member states' objective of creating an international community in which certain illegal substances are not used.
