Delivery Drones Fly into the Cannabis Sector

  • A San Francisco start-up intends to directly deliver its customers packages of medical marijuana with the help of these quadricopters, although it still requires approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Amazon's drones won't be the only ones sailing through the skies to deliver packages. Trees, a San Francisco-based startup, seeks to put these small, unmanned vehicles to a more specific use: distributing cannabis to their customers.

The company will only be able to accept orders for medical cannabis, as in California the consumption of medical marijuana is only legal for the treatment of certain diseases. “We see drones as an impressive tool for deliveries. A drone never will arrive late,” saysMarshall Hayner, the company's CEO.

The cuadricopters used by Trees would carry packages of different marijuana seeds, with prices ranging between 59 and 149 dollars (54 and 137 euros, respectively). According to the company the smallest format, 3.5 grams, is a perfect size to take to a concert or on a long walk.

Trees notes on its webpage that it is necessary to have a doctor's prescription to acquire their products, and lists the online services that a customer can use to request one. Consumers will be able to order their packages through the webpage, and even pay using bitcoins.

For the time being Trees plans to limit its deliveries to San Francisco, but for this it needs FAA approval. When they secure this permission drones will be able to fly over the city carrying packages of marijuana, thereby facilitating their acquisition by patients seeking to improve their quality of life through cannabis.
