When It Is Possible to Have a (Cannabis) Break during the Working Day

  • Some companies, especially those linked to cannabis, have begun to allow their workers to consume the plant in different forms. This happens in places where the plant has been legalised and which serve as an example for the rest of the world. Those who take this decision know that productivity and creativity depend on it.

There are people that cannot go without their mid-morning coffee with milk or their 10-minute break per day out on the terrace at work. Others perform better if they are able to consume their favourite plant in between reports. There are companies that bear this in mind and that have decided to take the (big) step forward of allowing their workers to have a break to enjoy it.

The managers of these types of companies are certain that this is the correct decision if it means that the employees perform better. As to be expected, these companies are located in areas where the consumption of the plant is permitted, especially in states of the U.S.

Flowhub, in Denver (Colorado), is an example. It is a company that provides software for the cannabis industry itself and where during each lunch break it is normal to see lots of people consuming foods with a touch of hemp. The company’s 18 employees are free to bring all kinds of fizzy drinks, juices, and cannabis foods. The co-founders of the company, Kyle Sherman and Chase Wiseman also do so at almost any time of day and even during meetings. They believe that it contributes to the emergence of new ideas and to create a “different perspective on things”.

This is also the case with MassRoots and High There!, two social networks for cannabis consumers. At their facilities it is also possible to have a cannabis break. “Cannabis is part of our culture”, states Darren Roberts, co-founder of the latter platform.

All of the companies tend to say that their workers consume cannabis at the end of the afternoon or when they need inspiration. “It has been very effective for us, for our business”, states Roberts. In turn, the founder of Mass Roots, Isaac Dietrich, says that it is necessary to follow the philosophy of being as productive and creative as possible every day: “If cannabis contributes to that, then we allow it".

These are good examples that make us see how the legalisation sector is moving forward. However, it is still necessary that other companies that are not linked to it dare to provide their workers with the same rights. If they manage to do so, they will understand that the best work is that which is done in the best and most comfortable conditions.
