- A study recently published by the National Library of Medicine, at the National Institutes of Health (USA) indicates that a cannabinoid-based treatment can be effective against osteoarthritis. This conclusion joins a long list of advantages offered by the use of medical cannabis, which is winning over more and more doctors, now advocates of its benefits.
Arthrosis (or osteoarthritis) is a condition arising from the wearing down of cartilage in the joints. Afflicting millions of people worldwide, it is considered one of the most common rheumatic diseases, and regularly affects the elderly, in the knees and hips, as well as the lower back, hands and neck. It also generates weakness and other problems related to the immune system.
A study published by the National Library of Medicine, at the National Institutes of Health (USA) has confirmed a new application for medical cannabis: cannabinoids are a vital resource against osteoarthritis, as they not only reduce its symptoms, but also relieve the pain linked to the disease's development.
There are two cannabinoids that, thanks to their properties and effects, are advanced as agents stemming the disease: CBD and THC. CBD is particularly capable of improving the condition of the immune system, in addition to constituting an antioxidant, anxiolytic and antidepressant. THC, meanwhile, boasts anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and can also help combat numerous diseases, including osteoarthritis.
It is precisely these conditions for which marijuana represents a powerful treatment, not only to relieve pain, but also to address its causes. Symptoms such as depression and anxiety, regularly affecting patients who develop the disease, are also mitigated. Cannabis is very effective against osteoarthritis, whether smoked or vaporised, and is especially effective when applied as a balm or cream.
This is far from the first study to demonstrate the efficacy of cannabis as a therapeutic tool. It had already been pointed out by numerous experts in the field as a key resource to treat a variety of ailments. These kinds of studies and their results are attracting more and more patients to these treatments. Medical cannabis, with its multiple medical uses, must be considered a remedy to treat a great many ailments.
